Choosing a Practitioner...
There are many alternative therapists practicing
today who may be able to treat you, particularly
when you are interested in one of the more
popular therapies, such as acupuncture, reiki,
or aromatherapy. This article offers tips on how
to find out which therapists are near you, and
how to choose between them.
The best way is to ask a friend or someone you
trust, if they can recommend a therapist. You
could also ask your GP if they can refer you to
someone, or recommend a practitioner.
Holistic practitioners can be found by looking
in the yellow pages, reading local specialist
publications, checking flyers in health food
shops, or on one of the many practitioner
listings to be found on the web.
You
can also write to the
complementary therapy organisations
(or professional bodies) governing the therapy
you are interested in, and ask them to send you
a list of registered practitioners. Depending on
the organisation, there may be a small charge
for this service.
So now you've got a list of possibilities, how
do you choose between them? As we mentioned
before, a personal recommendation is best. If
you're seeking treatment for a specific problem,
you may also want to find out whether the
therapist has experience of treating your
particular ailment or condition. You should also
check that the practitioner is properly
qualified and insured to practice.
Try to speak to the practitioner in person or on
the phone, to see whether you get on with them,
and whether they think they can help you.
Finally, if it's not working out, discuss your
problems with your therapist - maybe they know
of someone who might be in a better position to
help you.
